One bug is rarely a problem — most insects occasionally wander inside. Indicators of a real infestation: seeing the same pest repeatedly over several days, finding multiple individuals in the same area, finding droppings or nesting material, seeing damage to food, fabric, or wood, or finding an insect that is typically only found indoors when there is an established population (German cockroaches, bed bugs, carpenter ants).
Always treat early. Pest populations grow exponentially — a small, inexpensive problem becomes a severe, expensive one within weeks to months. German cockroaches double in population roughly every 30 days. A mouse entering in October can lead to 50-200 mice by spring. Bed bug infestations spread to additional rooms within weeks. The cost of early treatment is almost always a fraction of the cost of treating a severe, established infestation.
Two signs distinguish an established indoor infestation from a wandering individual: evidence (droppings, nesting, damage, egg cases) and recurring sightings. If you see the same pest more than 2-3 times in the same location within a week, treat it as an established problem. If you find droppings or evidence of nesting anywhere inside, treat it as established regardless of how many live individuals you have seen.
