Why Preparation Matters

Proper preparation before professional pest control treatment significantly affects effectiveness. For cockroach treatment: competing food sources reduce bait attractiveness. For flea treatment: unvacuumed carpet contains unhatchable eggs that respond better after vibration from vacuuming. For bed bug heat treatment: items left in place can block heat from reaching critical temperatures.

Your exterminator provides a specific preparation checklist for the treatment being performed. Below are the general preparation steps for each major treatment type.

Cockroach Treatment Preparation

  • Remove all food from countertops and store in sealed containers or the refrigerator
  • Empty all cabinets under sinks and in kitchen lower cabinets
  • Pull stove, refrigerator, and dishwasher away from walls if possible
  • Clean grease from stove and oven surfaces — this competes with bait
  • Remove pet food and water bowls before treatment
  • Do NOT clean kitchen surfaces with strong cleaners immediately before treatment — this removes the chemical cues that attract cockroaches to bait

Flea Treatment Preparation

  • Vacuum all carpeted floors and upholstered furniture thoroughly immediately before treatment — this stimulates eggs to hatch, making them vulnerable to IGR
  • Dispose of the vacuum bag or canister contents outside immediately
  • Wash all pet bedding and soft toys in hot water
  • Remove all items from the floor of closets
  • Have your pet's veterinarian-prescribed flea treatment applied on the same day as home treatment
  • Vacate with pets for 2-4 hours; do NOT vacuum after treatment for at least 2 weeks

Bed Bug Heat Treatment Preparation

  • Bag all clothing, bedding, and soft items in sealed bags and wash/dry on high heat
  • Remove candles, aerosol cans, houseplants, vinyl records, and musical instruments (heat-sensitive)
  • Unplug and remove lithium battery devices (laptops, phones) or leave them out of the home
  • Move furniture slightly away from walls for better heat circulation
  • Leave drawers slightly open for heat penetration
  • Remove pets, fish tanks, and birds — heat is lethal to them as well

Rodent Treatment Preparation

  • Clear access under sinks, behind appliances, and along baseboards
  • Seal all food in hard-sided containers
  • Note areas where you have seen droppings, heard scratching, or found gnaw marks
  • Remove clutter along walls where traps will be placed
