Exclusion — sealing entry points — has the broadest impact on the widest range of pest species. A home with every gap larger than 1/4 inch sealed against the foundation, around utilities, and at doors and windows resists mice, rats, insects, and wildlife far more effectively than any other single measure. It is also permanent once completed, unlike chemical treatments that require reapplication.

Annual inspections are appropriate for most homeowners, with additional inspections after major weather events or home renovations. Termite inspections should be annual in high-risk states (Florida, Texas, California, Southeast). Homeowners in high-pest-pressure areas or with a history of infestations benefit from quarterly preventive service agreements.

Excellent prevention significantly reduces infestation risk but does not eliminate it entirely. Pests enter through routes you have not yet sealed, through introduced items (luggage, secondhand furniture), from adjacent properties, or via utility connections. Prevention reduces both the frequency and severity of infestations — but periodic professional inspections catch developing problems before they become expensive.

Inspect your luggage thoroughly before bringing it inside your bedroom. Keep luggage in the bathroom or garage while inspecting. Look for rust-colored stains, dark spots, and live bugs in the seams of your bags, clothing, and packed items. Wash and dry all clothing on high heat immediately after travel. Do not put luggage on the bed or floor of the bedroom until it has been inspected.
